Poplar Basket Making Class

June 15 @ 10:00 am - 3:00 pm

Learn to take the bark of the native tulip poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera) and turn it into a handy basket to hold berries, mushrooms, flowers, snacks, or just to hang on the wall!  We will use hickory bark to stitch everything together and to use as a handle for carrying. This is a widespread tradition in the southern Appalachian Mountains, and is even featured in Foxfire 4. In addition, we will explore other traditional uses of tree bark in the southern Appalachians, like willow bark whistles and cordage making. Class size is limited to 8 and all tools and materials will be provided. Please bring your lunch.
