Beginning Sewing: Patchwork & Pieces
October 8 @ 10:00 am - 2:00 pm
BASIC SEWING class #1 Quilting and piecework sewing has been a skill used by many people in Appalachia as well as around the country for centuries.
“Patchwork and Pieces”
Come sit and sew with us as we use simple handsewing techniques to make small traditional quilt blocks and create mug mats or bookmarks from cotton fabric scraps. Learn how to join those smaller pieces together to create larger projects if you’d prefer. Maybe you’ll make a table runner for your family table, or begin to create a lap sized quilt to use for these cooler evenings.
Bring your own cotton fabrics to make a “memory piece” of your own, or select from an available scrap box provided.
You only need a few supplies: scissors, needle and thread, and cotton fabric. Quilting projects might need something to use for the middle lining, or “batting,” and a large fabric for the backing if you’d like to create a quilt of your own.
Paula Puckett is a hand quilter too, and she’s pieced quilt tops from cotton scraps, then used 48″x 60″ flannel blankets for lining, and cotton bedsheets for the back.
Max. 6 people
Cost $50 per person (supplies included*)
10 a.m.- 2 p.m.
(*Simple pattern for apron made from cotton fabric available for additional $5 fee.)
