Lyndall Toothman
Lyndall Toothman, known as Granny Toothman to all, was born in the mountains of West Virginia. She grew up like most mountain folk in the Southern Appalachians, living off the land and making just about all that they needed. During the Great Depression, she joined a WPA class on weaving, which began a long and fulfilling career with fiber arts. She began teaching and eventually ended up at a reformatory as a correctional officer, where she began a weaving department, teaching practical skills to the female prisoners. After several years at that position, she decided to give up her settled life and bought a camper. She traveled across the country over 26 times, stopping at different events and organizations to share her craft. Her products were as vibrant and unique as her personality.
