History:
This sampler plays on color pairing using chemically-dyed yarn. Because this sampler was done in plain weave, a simple over-under pattern, the emphasis for the viewer is on color, not design. Unlike the red and green woven coverlet, the manufactured yarns create a visual clash of colors, a striking choice that was done on purpose. Natural dyes are more subtle and have an undertone that prevent them from creating the tension between colors like these chemical dyes.
Description:
A small weaving with ecru cotton threads for the warp and various colored wool threads for the weft. The weft is used to create a stripe pattern, although strips vary in thickness. The colors include black, orange, brown, green, gold, magenta, light blue, royal blue, blue/red blend. Both the top and bottom edges are fringed with 5″ threads.
